After this Extremist Protest on Our Streets, Residents Need to Demonstrate Trump We Reject His Politics of Division

Something in our country transformed over the past few days. Like cities across the United Kingdom, London has witnessed demonstrations staged by the extremist groups before, but this felt different. More than a massive crowd filled the capital. Many thousands of them walked without incident. But a faction assaulted the police officers tasked with keeping Londoners secure.

These events witnessed didn’t come from nowhere. For years, our politicians and pundits have failed to criticize the growing wave of intolerance in the nation, opting to engage in divisive messaging and dangerous rhetoric themselves.

Currently, this toxic form of governance are emerging on to city centers. Ethnic and religious communities have expressed fear and countless others in the city and throughout the UK are alarmed. Among officials, quiet is not acceptable. The time has come to speak out and declare: we reject who our society represents.

Wider Context

Let's unite to confront the reactionary populists who are using financial anxieties, the isolation of modern life and a deepening skepticism of governmental and news organizations – a pattern noticed in nations across Europe and, unsurprisingly, in the US.

The White House occupant and his allies have perhaps done the most to encourage division of divisive, extremist ideologies internationally in the past decade. During his arrival to the United Kingdom on his maiden diplomatic tour, he had strategically utilized nationalism, discrimination and exclusionary rhetoric as an political tool.

Since that time, the strategies noticed from today’s White House look similar. Targeting immigrants, expelling American nationals, deploying the military to the public areas of diverse cities. These steps aren’t just inconsistent with western values – it's taken directly from the authoritarian handbook.

The Need for Honesty

One can appreciate the national position of staying practical on the international stage and wanting to preserve a positive connection with the president of the most powerful country in the world. Confronted by a revanchist Russia, the continent's safety seems at risk now than at any point since the 1940s. And the danger of escalating American taxes is ongoing.

Yet it remains essential to ensure our unique partnership entails being frank and direct with one another. At times, this implies being a critical friend and holding leaders accountable – and stating unequivocally that we reject the politics of anxiety and polarization.

Explaining the White House why he must back Ukraine, not Russia. Arguing for taking the environmental crisis seriously. Urging the president to stop the economic disputes that are damaging world economy apart. And putting pressure on him to do far greater to end the devastating assault on Gaza, as only he has the power to stop repeated and breaches of human rights to cease.

The Capital's Success

Additionally, let's tell the US leader and his allies to stop disparaging and belittling our great capital city. It stands as a international triumph, regardless of how he wants to deny reality. London is open, dynamic and less dangerous than any US state in terms of homicide rates. Maybe that explains a growing amount of US citizens are choosing to reside the metropolis.

The president and his supporters repeatedly discuss about the importance of free speech, depicting of the UK as a authoritarian regime where censorship means freedoms are endangered. That is far from the truth. In the coming days, it is likely many Londoners will speak up to remind the leader and his followers that we cannot be split by groups which seek to create division.

Our city is resolved for London to persevere as a bastion against bigotry, and be a symbol a optimistic model. We recognize strength in our multiculturalism, not division. And that we hold our liberal values with pride, rather than hiding them in shame.

Moving Forward

After last state visit six years ago, the manner we discuss governance has become more negative, contentious and risky. But the capital's essence and spirit are as inclusive and hopeful as before – because our modern, multicultural city isn’t going anywhere. Groups which seek to divide us will discover a capital committed to uphold its liberal, democratic values more fiercely ever.
